Clean & Green
Aluminum casting is an effective way of exterminating a fire ant colony while leaving behind no chemical residue to poison birds or pets. Since the aluminum is subsequently excavated, there literally is nothing left behind but a hole filled with heat-sterilized soil. It is perfect for use in gardens, pastures, or ecologically sensitive areas such as aquifer recharge zones.
You’ll be amazed!
Welcome to Austin Ant Casts. I make detailed casts of fire ant nests by pouring molten aluminum (1250 ° F) into a fire ant mound and allowing it to cool. After a few minutes, the cast is carefully excavated and the soil is removed. The result is an intricate metal sculpture showing the amazing architecture that usually lies hidden beneath our feet, and often contain native rocks, tree roots, and numerous ant impressions. The finished sculpture is then bolted to a polished marble or natural stone base for display. Most stand 12-15″ tall and 8-12″ in diameter. Casts range in value from $250-500 depending on size and complexity. Please email me to see a listing of current inventory in the Austin area.
Additionally, if you have fire ants in or around Austin, and would like to witness an unforgettable science moment, email me to schedule a casting. It is hard to describe the profound feeling of discovery and awe that accompanies an excavation as the chambers of the mound are discovered little by little. I’ve been a lifelong fan of backyard science projects, and this truly is one of the most amazing ones I’ve seen. A casting can be scheduled for $500 in the Austin area and includes mounting on your choice of stone base. Contact me at antcastaustin@gmail.com
